Today marks the five year anniversary of the formation of the IAOA.
Since its creation in Trento, Italy in 2009, the IAOA has grown into a budding but vibrant organization. Five years of hard
work have yielded results, as the field of Applied Ontology continues to grow. We wanted to take this opportunity to
recognize this important milestone, by taking a broad look at what we’ve accomplished and where we want to go.
We’re excited about the challenging five years ahead, as we recognize that there remains a lot of work in order to
popularize ontologies and their applications.
Each year, the IAOA has been involved in a variety of events, from organizing summer schools - the most recent being
the upcoming Second Interdisciplinary Summer School on Ontological analysis, to be held in Vitoria, ES Brazil on
September 15-19 (http://iaoa.org/isc2014/ ) – to sponsoring conferences and workshops
(http://iaoa.org/iaoasupportedevents/iaoasupportedevents.php), notably FOIS 2014 (http://iaoa.org/fois/2014.html ) and
sponsoring the Ontology Summit (http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit ).
This past year also marked the launch of several exciting new special interest groups, including one seeking to bring the
Semantic Web and Applied Ontology communities closer together (http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?IAOA_SWAO_SIG )
and another focusing on Design Semantics (http://cindy.informatik.uni-bremen.de/cosy/design-semantics/index.html ).
Coupled with the technical committees, we have been very active in fostering collaboration with other disciplines and
progressing the field of ontology. In addition, over the past two years, we have also seen new members elected to
the Executive Council (http://iaoa.org/iaoaorga/council/council.html), bringing fresh perspectives.
We look forward to what the future has in store, seeking out novel opportunities for interdisciplinary research and
international cooperation. The success of the 2014 Ontology Summit bodes well for developing stronger links with the
Semantic Web and Big Data communities, and thanks to our members, we plan to keep on growing.
